world community grid - technology solving problems

change the world . . . with your computer

Every day, millions of personal computers linked to the Internet sit idly at work or home while we go to lunch or take breaks. During this idle time, what if each of the estimated 650 million PC's could be linked, to work on humanity's most pressing issues?

Actually, they can - through World Community Grid.

World Community Grid's mission is to develop the largest public computing grid working to benefit humanity. It was created on the belief that technological innovation combined with scientific research and large-scale volunteerism can change the world for the better. Its success, however, depends on people collectively contributing unused computer time.
World Community Grid uses grid technology to create a permanent, flexible infrastructure that provides researchers with a readily-available pool of computing power that can be used to solve problems plaguing humanity. Grid technology links thousands of individual computers, creating a large system with massive computational power that far exceeds the power of a few supercomputers.

To help make this vision a reality, the Children's Home has become a partner of World Community Grid, joining IBM and a group of more than 225 companies, associations, foundations, nonprofits and academic institutions. The Children's Home is encouraging the community to contribute their idle PC time to assist this research by joining World Community Grid at www.worldcommunitygrid.org and becoming a member of our team: Children's Home.
To join, go to www.worldcommunitygrid.org, download, joining the "Children's Home" team, and install a free, small software program on your computer. When idle, your computer requests data from World Community Grid's server, performs computations on it, sends the results back to the server and prompts it for a new piece of work. World Community Grid is easy and safe to use.

"World Community Grid provides our busy community with an efficient and effective way to make a difference on problems that plague humanity," said Chip Houser, President and CEO. "We are asking individuals to join World Community Grid as part of our overall efforts to enrich the lives of our communities."
In its first year, World Community Grid ran the Human Proteome Folding Project, which provided scientists with data on how individual proteins within the human body affect human health, to help develop new cures for diseases like Lyme disease, malaria and tuberculosis. Scientists now have descriptions of 120,000 protein domains that are critical to human well-being. Without this grid technology, it would have taken 5 years to get these results -- compared with just 12 months on World Community Grid.

On Nov. 21, 2005 World Community Grid launched FightAIDS@Home. The goal of this project, sponsored by The Scripps Research Institute, is to identify new candidate drugs to block HIV protease, a key molecular structure that when blocked, stops the virus from maturing and thus is a way of avoiding the onset of AIDS and prolonging life.
On July 20, 2006, World Community Grid launched a new effort that will assist in cancer research using the massive computational power of World Community Grid. The Help Defeat Cancer project will use World Community Grid to analyze tissue microarrays (TMA), a new investigative tool that will ultimately help doctors select proper treatments and provide accurate prognosis for cancer patients.
