The Joan Sage Memorial Award was established at the Children's Home on June 25, 2009. Joan Sage, who passed away on February 2, 2009, devoted 23 years of her career in Education to the Children's Home - first as a Teacher in the Haskin's Non Secure Detention Program for 11 years and then as a Guidance Counselor in the Education Department for 12 years. Joan also is known as having created the Children's Art Work Calendar.

Through her commitment and dedication, Joan helped students to work to their potential and guided them toward a path of success. The Award will be made annually to student in our High School Program that has demonstrated a committment to education and desire to succeed. The recipient will be goal oriented with a plan to complete high school and receive a diploma, as well as demonstrate good character by exemplifying the core values of the Children's Home.

The "Friend to a Child" program is a cooperative effort between the Broome County Department of Social Services of New York State and the Children's Home that seeks to provide caring volunteer visitors to those children who otherwise would not have visitors.

Open your heart and your home to a child during a time of crisis and change. As a foster parent, you will guide and support your foster child every day. By your actions, you can help a child cope with the challenges that life brings. Foster care is temporary care for children who are unable to live with their birth families.

You can play an important role with your heart . . . and your time.
