Clara Stine Hughes, born January 16, 1912, died June 20, 2010. Clara, a "cradle Methodist" was not unlike those who helped us begin our journey as the Deaconess' Home. We learned late last year that Clara had named the Children's Home as the sole beneficiary in her will. Her bequest will assist us in carrying out the work that is so important - caring for children and working with families. We honor Clara's memory by naming the original orphanage building the Clara Hughes Administration Building. For a full article on Clara as written by the Rev. Jane O'Borski, click here.

The Children's Home will begin a new project that you will hear much more about in the coming months. This project is called CARE - Children and Residential Experiences. CARE is a promising practice model designed by the Residential Child Care Project at Cornell University. This is the same project that brings us Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI).

The Children's Home has been awarded a $155,811 contract from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. The one year award will allow our Therapeutic After School Program (TASP) to serve additional children. The after school program currently provides, transportation, meals, recreation, educational assistance, counseling and parental support to 36 Broome County children and their families. The program operates year round.
